For most commercial padel projects, both 10mm and 12mm tempered glass can be suitable, but they should not be treated as interchangeable specifications. A 12mm panel is heavier and more rigid, which can be useful for demanding outdoor sites and certain structural designs, while 10mm glass reduces weight and may be sufficient when the court structure, panel size, fixing system and local loads have been properly engineered. The right choice should therefore be based on the complete court system, not on the assumption that thicker glass is automatically better.
This distinction matters because the current International Padel Federation (FIP) rules do not simply state that every padel court must use either 10mm or 12mm glass. Instead, FIP requires glass courts to comply with the applicable standards for tempered/plate glass and refers manufacturers and projects to its Court Homologation requirements. The enclosure must also provide a hard, smooth surface and a uniform ball rebound.
So, when comparing 10mm vs 12mm padel court glass, thickness is only the starting point.

Glass walls are part of the playing area in padel. Players regularly use them to return balls, and they may also come into physical contact with the wall during play.
At the same time, the glass forms part of a much larger enclosure exposed to structural loads. On an outdoor court, wind can place significant pressure on large glass surfaces and the supporting steel structure. Standard soda-lime glass weighs approximately 2.5 kg per square meter for every millimeter of thickness, meaning 10mm glass is roughly 25 kg/m² and 12mm glass about 30 kg/m². Saint-Gobain publishes the same 25 kg/m² and 30 kg/m² figures for 10mm and 12mm glass respectively.
That 5 kg/m² difference may look small, but across all of the glass used in a complete padel court, it affects transportation, lifting, installation and the loads carried by the support system.
The main advantage of 10mm padel court glass is that it can provide the required playing wall while keeping overall glass weight lower.
For a properly engineered court, this has several practical benefits.
At approximately 25 kg/m², 10mm glass is lighter than 12mm glass.
Lower weight can simplify transportation and installation and reduces the permanent load transferred through the glass supports into the steel structure.
This can be relevant when multiple courts are being shipped internationally or installed inside an existing building.
Padel glass panels are large components that require careful lifting and positioning.
Reducing panel weight does not eliminate the need for professional equipment, but it can make site handling less demanding than an equivalent 12mm panel.
For large club developments with several courts, installation efficiency can become an important project consideration.
Less glass material normally means a lower material cost, while the reduced weight can also affect logistics.
However, buyers should be careful about selecting 10mm glass purely to reduce the quotation price.
If the project actually requires a different specification because of panel dimensions, structural configuration or site loads, changing the glass simply to save money is the wrong approach.
The most obvious difference with 12mm padel court glass is increased thickness and rigidity.
A thicker pane resists deformation more strongly when other conditions are comparable. This can be useful when the structural design calls for additional stiffness or when glass panels are incorporated into systems with reduced framing.
One reason buyers consider 12mm glass is its reduced flexibility compared with a thinner panel of the same dimensions.
This may be important in some panoramic court configurations, where the design aims to reduce visual obstruction and therefore changes how the glass and surrounding steel structure work together.
But this does not mean that every panoramic padel court automatically needs 12mm glass.

12mm is thicker, therefore 12mm is always safer.
That is too simplistic.
The FIP's current rules focus on the performance of the enclosure and require glass courts to comply with standards for tempered/plate glass. Tempering quality

Damage or defects around the edges can affect glass performance.
Drilled holes
Padel court panels commonly require fixing points. Hole processing, positioning and interaction with hardware need to be controlled correctly.
Fixings
Metal-to-glass contact, incorrect tightening or poorly designed mounting hardware can create undesirable local stresses.
Steel structure
The glass is supported by the court structure. If that structure moves excessively or does not manage loads correctly, simply specifying thicker glass does not solve the underlying engineering issue.
Installation
Panels must be transported, lifted, aligned and fixed correctly. Installation quality therefore forms part of the finished glass system.
For buyers, the better question is not:
“Is 12mm safer than 10mm?”
It is:
“Has the complete 10mm or 12mm glass system been designed for this particular court and installation environment?”
The primary requirement is that the finished wall provide a uniform rebound.
FIP states that wall materials must have suitable consistency and a uniform, hard and completely smooth surface so that the ball behaves consistently during play.
In a correctly designed court, both 10mm and 12mm glass systems can therefore be intended to provide the playing characteristics required from a glass wall.
Buyers should be cautious about claims such as:
“12mm gives professional rebound”;
“10mm is only for amateur courts”;
“thicker glass automatically makes the game faster.”
These statements oversimplify court performance.
Rebound quality also depends on the installation, support system, panel alignment and overall construction quality.
Indoor projects generally experience fewer environmental variables than exposed outdoor projects because the court is protected by the building envelope.
That can make 10mm tempered glass a practical option for many properly engineered indoor installations.
However, indoor does not automatically mean 10mm.
The manufacturer still needs to consider:
glass panel dimensions;
court structure;
support configuration;
expected use;
applicable standards;
installation requirements.
A panoramic indoor court may have different structural requirements from a more heavily framed conventional court even though both are installed in the same building.
Not automatically.
Outdoor applications require closer attention to environmental conditions, particularly wind exposure. But simply changing a specification from 10mm to 12mm does not constitute proper wind-load engineering.
For an outdoor glass padel court, the supplier should evaluate the complete system, including:
local design wind conditions;

An exposed outdoor site may justify a heavier specification, but another properly engineered project may use a different solution.

A conventional padel court typically has more visible steel framing supporting the enclosure. A panoramic padel court reduces some of these visual interruptions to improve spectator visibility.
As structural framing changes, the relationship between the glass and the steel structure also changes.
This means you should never compare two court quotations only like this:
Supplier A: 10mm glass
Supplier B: 12mm glass
Instead, compare:
glass thickness + panel layout + steel structure + fixing system + structural calculations
A 12mm panel does not automatically make one court structurally superior if the rest of the system has not been designed to the same standard.
It can.
Because 12mm glass weighs about 30 kg/m² versus approximately 25 kg/m² for 10mm glass, the same glazed area is roughly 20% heavier.
For international padel court projects, that difference can influence:
packed shipment weight;

container planning;
lifting equipment;
manpower requirements;

It does not mean that 12mm is economically unattractive. If the engineering calls for 12mm, the additional cost is justified by the project requirements.

There is no universal winner.
Choose 10mm padel court glass when the complete court system has been engineered for it and the installation conditions do not require a heavier specification. Its lower weight can make transportation and installation more efficient.
Choose 12mm padel court glass when the court design, structural configuration or site conditions justify greater glass thickness and rigidity.
Most importantly, do not use thickness as a shortcut for evaluating court quality.
A good padel court is not defined by one specification in a quotation. Glass thickness must work together with the tempering process, panel design, steel frame, fasteners, anchors, foundation and installation conditions.
For sports clubs, resorts and commercial padel facilities comparing suppliers, asking why a manufacturer recommends 10mm or 12mm glass is often more useful than simply asking which thickness they provide.
The difference between 10mm and 12mm padel court glass is real: 12mm glass is thicker, more rigid and about 20% heavier per square meter, while 10mm glass reduces weight and can be suitable for many properly designed court systems.
But neither thickness should be selected in isolation.
FIP requires the enclosure to provide suitable playing performance and glass courts to comply with applicable tempered/plate-glass requirements; the current main rulebook does not simply declare one universal glass thickness for every padel court.
For a commercial buyer, the most reliable approach is therefore:
Choose the court design first, evaluate the installation environment, confirm the structural engineering, and then specify the appropriate glass thickness as part of the complete system.
