First established in Mexico in 1969, Padel is a closed-court racket sport that blends elements of tennis and squash. It is typically played in doubles on a smaller court than a doubles tennis court, enclosed by glass and metal walls. Compared to tennis, padel is more social, accessible, and less physically demanding, making it suitable for players of all ages. It is rapidly becoming one of the most popular leisure competitive sports worldwide.

1. What types of surface materials are used on padel courts?
Common surface materials include:
Artificial Turf: Currently the most popular, it offers moderate friction, is suitable for fast movement, and provides excellent shock absorption. Professional competitions mostly use artificial turf.
Concrete: Durable and low-maintenance, but lacks the comfort and playing experience of artificial turf.
Wood Flooring: Commonly used for indoor portable courts, it offers comfort but requires high moisture resistance and maintenance requirements.
2. What wall materials are used on padel courts?
Tempered Glass: It offers excellent light transmittance, enhances viewing experience and court aesthetics, and is also the standard for official competitions.
Metal Mesh: Commonly used in some informal venues, it offers a lower cost, but the ball bounce and visual experience are inferior to tempered glass.
3. Portable vs. Permanent Courts
Portable courts: Suitable for temporary events, exhibitions, or club rentals. They offer quick installation and flexibility, but are less durable.
Permanent courts: They have a solid foundation and a longer lifespan, making them suitable for professional clubs, schools, or long-term operations.
4. Durability and Maintenance Requirements for Padel Courts
Artificial turf: Lifespan is approximately 5–8 years, requiring regular cleaning, sand filling, and brushing.
Tempered glass walls: Lifespan can exceed 10 years, with maintenance primarily consisting of cleaning and regular safety inspections.
Metal mesh: Highly durable, but requires rust prevention.
Overall, a professionally constructed permanent court can last 15–20 years with normal use and maintenance.
5. How much space does a padel court require?
A standard padel court measures 20 meters by 10 meters, plus a surrounding safety zone.
Indoor courts: It is recommended to reserve at least 22 meters by 12 meters for a buffer zone. Outdoor courts also require additional surrounding space for ventilation, drainage, and spectator areas.
6. Can outdoor courts be used year-round?
Yes, but climate conditions must be considered:
Glass and metal structures are cold- and heat-resistant and suitable for use in most regions.
Artificial turf is highly waterproof and requires only a brief drain after rain before use.
In extremely cold or snowy regions, regular snow removal and ice prevention are necessary. In areas with strong UV rays, UV-resistant materials are recommended.
7. How often should padel courts be maintained?
Artificial turf: Weekly inspection for cleanliness, monthly brushing and sand filling.
Walls and frames: Quarterly safety inspections are recommended.
Overall maintenance: Annual comprehensive inspections, including structural bolts, drainage systems, and lighting.
